JACK 96.9 (CJAQ-FM Calgary) broadcasts on 96.9 FM under the Rogers Sports & Media umbrella. Their long-time motto is "Playing What We Want," and honestly, it’s one of the few stations that actually lives up to it.

There are no strict genre boundaries here. You can easily hear Canadian rock staples like The Tragically Hip and Sloan right alongside Madonna, Whitney Houston, Green Day, and then suddenly a throwback rap track from 2Pac or Coolio. If you’re exhausted by stations that loop the same twenty chart-toppers until your ears bleed, JACK is a welcome relief. The vibe is laid-back with that classic dry Alberta humor, and the hosts don't waste time on long chatter—just quick updates on Calgary traffic, local weather, and back to the tunes.

That said, it’s definitely not for everyone. The constant style hopping works great as background music for a commute or working in the garage, but if you’re looking for a specific mood—like pure heavy metal or non-stop modern pop—the wild shifts will probably get on your nerves.

I left JACK 96.9 playing in the background from about 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM on a weekday, and the sheer randomness of the music kept things surprisingly interesting. In a single hour, they went from Kim Mitchell straight into 2Pac, followed by Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, and then slammed right into Def Leppard. It’s a wild clash of eras, but it actually keeps you awake behind the wheel better than a second cup of coffee.

What impressed me most was the variety. Over four full hours, not a single song repeated. A few heavy hitters like Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, and Green Day got played twice, but always with different tracks. The music easily took up over 80% of the airtime—commercial breaks were short (usually just two or three minutes a couple of times an hour), and the DJs stayed out of the way, jumping on the mic for maybe fifteen seconds without talking over the song intros or endings.

If I had to break down what you actually hear, roughly half the station is built on classic and Canadian rock, about a third is pop from the 80s and 90s, and the rest is a fun mix of 90s alternative and random hip-hop throwbacks. It’s chaotic, local, and feels completely unscripted—which is exactly why it works.
